So, as Charleston music evolved to swing music, Charleston dancing evolved to swing dancing / the Lindy Hop. That movement led to the swing out, which is a standard movement in the Lindy Hop. Eventually something called a breakaway was developed, where the partners would momentarily separate and come back together. At the time, they were facing each other (not like the video). I think it was a solo dance first, and then people started doing it as partners. You might know that people were doing Charleston in the 20s. Historians can correct me if I get anything wrong. Having not been to the lesson, I don't know why, but I can provide some context. So my question is simple: Are there any moves (other than the ones I listed) that I should know before heading out to a swing dance event? If so, do people have any links to videos teaching them? Do people have any good lesson recommendations for the NYC area? ![]() I still feel kinda naked feeling the need to pad out the entirety of a song while knowing there's more to do and not knowing how to do it, especially since I've watched people doing crazy shit online. I know the basic back-step triple-step pattern, as well as the basic tuck turn, so I'm not coming in completely blind. I'm completely fine with making an ass of myself in the learning process, but I at least need to know what I'm shooting for before I attempt it, y'know? haha However, the one thing I think that's holding me back from truly going is my complete ignorance of what exactly to do. My roommate is a swing dancer and has slowly convinced me to join them in going to swing dance functions over the time we've lived in New York, especially now as we're coming out of the pandemic and in-person events are coming back.
